Feast of Our lady of San Juan de Los Lagos

The Feast of Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos is a time to thank God for the gift of our Blessed Mother and the miracles occurred on and around the events surrounding Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos in Jalisco, Mexico.

The Feast of Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos is celebrated on February 2nd of each year. After a solemn Mass, the celebration would continue with Mexican food and music. Immediately after the parish celebration, the image of Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos begins a pilgrimage throughout four or five parishes of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. The parish men’s group, “Peregrinos de María” are in charge of translating the image of Our Lady.

Dia de los Reyes

Dia de los Reyes

The “Día de Los Reyes” (Three Wise Men - also known as Epiphany) is celebrated on January 6 or the closest Sunday to January 6 to honor the Three Wise Men. This holiday represents the day the Three Wise Men gave gifts to Jesus, and the day closes the Christmas festivities. It’s also the day the people of Mexico exchange gifts!

During “Día de Los Reyes”, Mexicans serve Rosca de Reyes, or King’s Cake. “Rosca” means wreath and “reyes” means kings. The Rosca de Reyes has an oval shape to symbolize a crown and has a small doll inside, which represents baby Jesus. The doll figure symbolizes the hiding of the infant Jesus from King Herod’s troops. Traditionally, roscas are adorned with dried and candied fruits to symbolize the many jewels that a crown would have. The person who gets the slice with the doll must host a party on “Día de la Candelaria” in February.

At Our Lady Queen of Peace, the “Dia de Reyes” is also the occasion to receive the “Three Wise Men” during our Sunday Masses, and give presents to the children of our parish.

Arrullo del Niño

Arrullo del Niño

The “Arrullo del Niño” (Lullaby for Baby Jesus) is a Mexican tradition where participants bring their own image of Baby Jesus and, after a blessing by the priest, they sing lullaby for the sleepy Baby Jesus. Each family should name the “padrinos” of their Baby Jesus; they would be in charge of dressing and carefully rocking the Baby with a blanket.

The “Arrullo del Niño” is celebrated each year during the Posada that falls on the Saturday before Christmas.

Posadas

Las Posadas is a novena (an extended devotional prayer). It is celebrated chiefly in Latin America, Mexico, Guatemala, Cuba, and by Hispanics in the United States. It is celebrated each year between December 16 and December 24. During Las Posadas, there is a prayer of the Holy Rosary, and the traditional pilgrimage of people signifying Joseph and Mary looking for an inn or place where Jesus would be born. At the end, the attendants share typical Mexican food, and play a “Piñata” with the children participants of the Posada.
